Frequently asked questions
Which Linux distribution should I choose as a beginner?
Ubuntu and Fedora are the easiest starts: both install in a few clicks, have a large community and update themselves from a graphical app. Ubuntu has long-term support releases (5 years of updates); Fedora ships newer software. Debian is very stable and a good choice for older PCs. Arch Linux is for users who want to build their system piece by piece.
Will installing an operating system delete my files?
A clean install erases the disk you choose. Back up your files to an external drive or cloud storage first. Installing next to an existing system (dual boot) keeps it, but backing up is still the safe choice.
Do I need a Microsoft account to install Windows 11?
No. Windows 11 Pro can use a local account through the work or school sign-in options, and a USB drive made with Rufus can skip the Microsoft account screen on both Home and Pro. The Windows handbook and the install video show both ways.
What do I need to make an install USB drive?
A USB flash drive of at least 8 GB (everything on it is erased) and the system's ISO file. On Windows use Rufus or the official tool (Media Creation Tool for Windows, Fedora Media Writer for Fedora).
How do I start my computer from the USB drive?
Plug in the drive, restart, and tap the boot menu key right away: often F12 (Dell, Lenovo, Acer), F9 or Esc (HP), F8 or Esc (ASUS) or F11 (MSI). Choose the USB drive and press Enter. If there is no menu, open the firmware settings with F2 or Delete and move the USB drive to the top of the boot order.
Can I try Linux without installing it?
Yes. Ubuntu and Fedora start as a live system from the USB drive, so you can try them first and install only if you like them. Nothing on your disk changes until you start the installer.
Are the handbooks and PDFs free?
Yes. Every handbook can be read online and downloaded as PDFs (Install, Beginner and Advanced), with no account and no sign-up.
Why are long steps sped up in the videos?
Downloading, writing the USB drive and installing can take a long time, so the videos speed them up or skip ahead. On your computer these steps may be faster or slower depending on your hardware and internet connection.
